The main aim of the Centre of Excellence for Fundamental Studies in Structural Engineering is to develop novel ideas and new methods and algorithms for optimal analysis and design of systems with a particular emphasis on structures. The main tools used for the above purposes consist of linear and multi-linear algebra, group theory, graph theory, algebraic graph theory, topology, matroids, heuristic and meta-heuristic algorithms such as genetic algorithms, ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization, bee colony, harmony search, Big Bang-Big Crunch, and Charged System Search. Due to the importance of the earthquake in Iran, problems relevant to earthquake engineering from structural and geotechnical points of view also constitute another important issue of investigation in this center. Optimal seismic design of large-scale structures such as domes, barrel vaults, single, double and triple layer grids will naturally be included in these researches. Extensions will also be made to finite element analysis of structures and continuums. |
