Abstract:   (68 Views)
Industrial-building optimization requires coordinated decisions about structural systems, foundations, the building envelope, services, production requirements, and operational continuity. This integrative narrative review brings together selected research studies, standards, and technical guidance to develop a conceptual framework for facility-specific decision-making across the building lifecycle. The synthesis is organized around site and baseline characterization, alternative generation, feasibility screening, lifecycle comparison, implementation planning, and post-commissioning verification. Structural and geotechnical adequacy, serviceability, process safety, and applicable regulatory requirements are treated as feasibility conditions, while lifecycle cost, greenhouse-gas emissions, energy use, and production disruption are treated as decision criteria. The review emphasizes the need for consistent assessment boundaries, functionally equivalent alternatives, transparent assumptions, and sensitivity analysis. Published case findings are interpreted within their original contexts rather than as transferable performance forecasts. The proposed framework supports coordination among engineering and operational disciplines but is not a validated optimization algorithm and is not claimed to be exhaustive. Its intended contribution is to make cross-disciplinary dependencies and lifecycle trade-offs explicit, thereby supporting transparent project appraisal and identifying priorities for future empirical validation.
